The fans perspective - Lance Armstrong streaks by

I have said it many times that the fan at home watching on TV knows way more about a major bike race like the Tour de France than the folks actually at the race. Onsite its hard to get info, you are usually operating between two different points (start - finish) and its usually impossible to get to both, the languages are often challenging (the papers arent in English). Its great to be there, you go for the atmosphere and the incredible spectacle, but you rarely know what’s going on.

Okay, so let’s say you’re there, so you hustle to the Tour stage finish, get there several hours early, you pick your spot, you fight to maintain it, you don’t go the bathroom, you don’t eat or drink, you don’t move, you stand in a tight crowd, your batteries on the camera are charged - or are they? you have plenty of memory left - or do you? do you shoot video or pics? After those 50 things your favorite rider is coming, you think, its Lance Armstrong…ready?…HERE HE COMES!!!

You get bumped but you get the camera up, hours of pushing and fighting for the love of it, for this moment!…Lance comes ripping by you in less than eight seconds…did you get the shot? YES! Okay, it’s time to pack up and go back to the hotel now.
